About DwellBudget
DwellBudget exists for one reason: budget home improvement is full of overpriced bad advice. Either you're reading a contractor's blog telling you to spend $8,000 on a "small" kitchen refresh, or you're on Pinterest watching someone hot-glue a backsplash that'll fall down in three months.
We sit in the middle. Every comparison on this site is built for renters and budget-conscious homeowners — people who want their place to look good without taking out a HELOC or losing their security deposit.
How we compare materials
Each category page covers a fixed reference room size (40 sq ft for bathroom floor, 100 sq ft for cabinets, etc.) so the totals are directly comparable. For every material we track:
- Total cost for the reference room, including primer, adhesive, grout or fasteners where relevant.
- Lifespan based on manufacturer data and real-world reviews, not marketing claims.
- Difficulty on a 1–5 scale, judged against an average DIY-er with basic tools.
- Renter-friendliness — whether you can install it without permission and remove it on move-out.
How we pick the top option
The "best value" pick on each page isn't the cheapest and isn't the most durable — it's the one with the best cost-per-year over its real lifespan, weighted toward renter-friendliness when prices are close.
