What this site does
DwellBudget is a budget home improvement comparison site for renters and cost-conscious homeowners. Every category page sets a fixed reference room size, lists 3โ4 real material options at current US-market prices, and breaks down cost-per-year over each material's realistic lifespan. The "best value" pick on each page isn't the cheapest โ it's the one with the best cost over time, weighted toward renter-friendly removability where prices are close.
Why we built this
Most home improvement content is either contractor blogs telling you to spend $8,000 on a "small" kitchen refresh, or Pinterest tutorials for projects that fall apart in three months. We sit in the middle: every option here is realistic for a DIY-er with basic tools, all prices come from Amazon and Home Depot listings, and the comparisons take into account whether you'll lose your security deposit when you move out.
How to use the comparison tool
Click any category above to open the comparison tool. Enter your room size in square feet and the prices update instantly. Sort by upfront price, lifespan, or installation difficulty. Filter to renter-friendly options only if you don't own. Every recommendation links to a current Amazon listing โ clicking through helps us keep the site running and costs you nothing extra.
What's not on this site
- No pro-only projects. If it needs a contractor, we don't cover it.
- No products with bad reviews. We pick from what actually works in real homes.
- No inflated "compare to" prices. Real Amazon and big-box pricing only.
